New York Trip Re-Boot

Here's some more information about the trip to New York to visit some sites of historical interest in the development of the Episcopal Church.

- We will leave by air-conditioned bus from St. Paul's parking lot at 8:00 am on Saturday, July 15th.

- The bus will take us everywhere we need to go in NYC, thus minimizing walking for those with some mobility issues.

- We will arrive in Manhattan by 10:00 am. While there, we will see the following:

The General Theological Seminary [confirmed]


Trinity/St. Paul's, Wall Street [confirmed]



St. Thomas' Church, Fifth Avenue [yet to be confirmed, they may have a wedding in progress that day]


St. Bartholomew Church [yet to be confirmed, although I anticipate no difficulty]


- Some additional information:

St. Paul's, Wall Street is directly across from the memorial site for the World Trade Center. If you have not been to this site yet, it is memorable in its vacancy. Many of the rescue workers sought respite at St. Paul's five years ago, with some of them permitted to nap on the pews. We hope to have an official tour guide with us during this stop.

St. Bart's has a gift shop and cafe, and we may be able to arrange a tour guide there, too.

St. Thomas is on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 53rd St., an easy walk to St. Patrick's Cathedral, Rockefeller Center, and Tiffany's [bring your wallets, guys], as well as other shopping sites. The theologian in residence is a seminary classmate of mine and, if he's still speaking to me, I hope he will be able to join us for our tour.

The General Theological Seminary is one of the most beautiful and secret places in the city. Imagine a garden surrounded by low buildings in the center of a city block, and you get the idea. In addition to being the flagship seminary of the Episcopal Church, you may recognize portions of the interior from many New York-based television shows, especially since the studio for the "Law and Order" shows is on the next block.

- We will leave NYC by 6:00 pm with the intention of returning to St. Paul's by 8:00 pm

- Historical information, handouts, and maps will be made available to the participants at some time before the departure dates.

- The total cost is $25 to be paid before the departure date.

- There will be a sign-up sheet available in the narthex beginning on Sunday, June 18th. Those who have already signed up for the trip may want to check the list to insure that their names are on it.

- Those not members of St. Paul's are welcome, too, and may call the parish office to make reservations.
