Memorial Weekend

Although it is not seasonal, I find this Christmas photo of Arlington Cemetery affecting.

There is something particularly American about a cemetery where all bear the same, simple headstone; from John F. Kennedy to the virtually unknown Ira Hayes, who died penniless on an Arizona reservation.

At the urging of clergy, last year President Bush designated Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace. The official declaration may be found here.

From our Christian tradition, I offer the following:

Lord, O Judge of the nations, we remember before you with grateful hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy. Grant that we may not rest until all people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines. Amen
